Purpose and responsibilities

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Graduate Software Engineer to join our small, innovative, and fast-paced team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of cutting-edge automated production systems at BigSis, helping revolutionize sustainable agriculture.

About the Role:

As a Graduate Software Engineer, you’ll gain hands-on experience working across multiple areas of our technology stack—from embedded systems on our insect-rearing modules to cloud-based data collection and analytics. You'll also help develop and maintain operational tools and field applications used in real-world deployments.

You’ll be supported by experienced engineers and have opportunities to grow your skills in embedded development, artificial intelligence and cloud services (AWS) / data analytics.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assist in developing software for embedded systems across BigSis production modules.
• Support the development of field and operational applications used in our insect rearing process.
• Contribute to data handling systems that store and process information in AWS.
• Participate in building and refining AI models for processing at different stages of the insect rearing system
• Collaborate with the team to improve software development tools and workflows.

Qualifications and experience

We're seeking someone who thrives in a start-up environment and is comfortable delivering functional, "good-enough" solutions under time pressure—while continuously refining and improving the systems over time.

Essential

• 2:1 degree in computer science or relevant engineering discipline
• Python/C++/C, PyTorch, Numpy, Pandas, Tensorflow, Computer Vision, OpenCV, JavaScript, HTML
• Solution orientated with an ability to think outside the box

Desirable experience

• Hands-on experience designing and implementing control mechanisms for production line automation
• Design of low power automated systems and/or equipment, e.g. animatronics, vending machines or kitchen appliances
• Use of embedded microcontrollers/IDEs, e.g. Raspberry Pi, Okdo, Tinker Edge R
• AWS cloud storage and data analytics
• Android / IoS mobile applications
• Experience working with 3rd party remote software developers
• Experience working with stepper motors, servo motors, automatic material handling systems
• Project management skills or certification
• Design and assembly of electronic circuits, electrical panels and/or PCBs
• Work in an environment with hygiene and/or regulatory requirements, such as the food, cosmetics or medical sectors

You need to be comfortable working with live insects, including spending time in the hot and humid insect rearing area. Insects and their growth cells are very small, so you need good fine work skills.

Application Process

To be considered for this role, please send a CV and cover letter explaining why you think you are the right person for this job. Please include information about your education, work experience and current salary.

BigSis is an equal opportunities employer. Applicants will be considered without attention to age, sex, race, disability, pregnancy, marital status, sexual orientation, gender reassignment and religious background.

You may also have experience in the following: Graduate Software Engineer, Software Developer, Senior .Net Developer,.Net Developer, Lead Developer, Software Engineer, Technical Lead, Senior Software Engineer, Senior Web Developer, Programmer, Software Developer, Developer, etc.

How to Get a Better Robotics Job After a Lay-Off or Redundancy

Redundancy in the robotics industry can feel like a sudden halt, particularly in such a complex, fast-evolving field. But with robotics at the heart of innovation across manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, logistics, and defence, the UK continues to offer excellent career opportunities. Whether you're a robotics software engineer, systems integrator, mechanical design expert, or autonomous systems researcher, this guide is here to help you reset, rebrand, and relaunch your career after redundancy.

Robotics Jobs Salary Calculator 2025: Work Out Your True Worth in Seconds

Why yesterday’s pay survey is already outdated for UK robotics professionals Ask a Robotics Software Engineer fine‑tuning SLAM algorithms, a Mechatronics Engineer chasing motor‑controller jitter at 3 a.m., or a Field Robotics Specialist testing autonomous tractors in Somerset: “Am I earning what I deserve?” The honest answer changes every quarter. Retail warehouses roll out 1,000 collaborative arms overnight; battery subsidies super‑charge autonomous delivery start‑ups; & the UK government pledges £200 million for industrial robot adoption. Each shock nudges salary bands. Any salary guide printed in 2024 reads like a dusty datasheet—ignorant of the NHS surgical‑robot procurement boom, the Midlands EV‑assembly cobot surge, or the drone‑in‑dock pilots blanketing Scottish offshore wind farms. To turn guesswork into evidence, RoboticsJobs.co.uk distilled a transparent, three‑factor formula. Feed in your discipline, region, & seniority; you’ll get a realistic 2025 salary benchmark—no stale averages, no fuzzy “competitive” labels. This article unpacks the formula, spotlights six forces pushing robotics pay skyward, & sets out five practical moves to boost your market value inside ninety days.

How to Present Robotics Solutions to Non-Technical Audiences: A Public Speaking Guide for Job Seekers

Robotics is changing the world—from smart factories and autonomous vehicles to healthcare assistants and drone deliveries. But no matter how advanced the system is, a robotics solution won’t be adopted unless it’s clearly understood by those who make decisions: business leaders, clients, investors, and end-users. That’s why employers in the UK robotics industry are now actively seeking candidates who can communicate clearly and confidently with non-technical audiences. Whether you’re a recent graduate, a mechanical engineer, a software specialist or an automation consultant, your ability to explain how your robots work—and why they matter—could be the difference between getting shortlisted and getting hired. This guide shows you how to structure your robotics presentation, design effective slides, use storytelling and analogies, and answer common stakeholder questions—so you can stand out in interviews and beyond.
