Brief Job Description

In line with our ongoing investments, the School of Engineering are seeking to appoint a driven and highly research active Mechanical Engineer with expertise in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence.

Robotics is advancing rapidly, driven by innovation across hardware, software and the intelligent control that binds them. Artificial Intelligence is reshaping how robotic systems are designed and how autonomously they operate, opening fresh engineering challenges in perception, actuation, human–robot interaction and systems integration. Meeting these challenges calls for engineers who can turn principled mechanics and control into dependable, real-world solutions.

This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the UK’s ambitions in robotics technologies, supported by leading industry collaborations and strong funding opportunities. It will also impact on the training of the next generation of engineers in the digital, robotics and AI skills demanded by modern industry.

The key duties and responsibilities will include but not be limited to: giving lectures and seminars and supervising undergraduate / post-graduate students, course development and innovation, taking an active part in examinations, carrying out innovative research and writing papers on topics relevant to the specialist subject area, and obtaining research grant funding. They will also contribute to Departmental/School administration and actively support an inclusive working environment.

Person Specification

Applicants should hold a PhD with direct relevance to engineering robotics. They should demonstrate high-quality research outputs appropriate to their career stage and potential to secure external or industry-linked funding. They should also have extensive teaching experience and scholarship within the subject specialism; and demonstrate effective communication, collaboration, organisation, mentoring, academic citizenship, and commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Carl Anthony, email , Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering.
