SALARY £45-50,000 BASE PLUS EXCELLENT BENEFITS PACKAGE

Based in Edinburgh and with bases across the UK, GWR Talent's client has over 20 years of experience designing and delivering highly complex automated storage equipment and managing full turnkey projects from design through to installation and commissioning for household retail clients. The business is expanding into new geographies, new customers and developing new technology. They now need to make the key hire of a Mechanical Design Engineer.
Working hybrid from home and in the Edinburgh office/Edinburgh Park (3 days per week), the Mechanical Design Engineer will also support the field service team, occasionally travelling to sites to support installation and commissioning projects.

Reporting to the Head of Engineering, the Mechanical Design Engineer will join a hard working well established team. This is an excellent role, combining NPI/NPD from early stage to production, ongoing product development and cost saving / redesign projects, supporting customers and the installation and commissioning team both on and off site. Key responsibilities include:

Design Generation: Create and develop mechanical designs and concepts based on customer requirements, project objectives, and industry standards; using CAD software (Solidworks).
Design Optimisation: Optimise designs for performance, manufacturability, cost-effectiveness, and efficiency.
Engineering Analysis: Conduct engineering analysis to assess the feasibility, functionality and performance of mechanical designs. Employ techniques such as Root Cause Analysis and FMEA.
Documentation and Technical Drawings: Prepare detailed technical documentation, including assembly drawings, technical files, specifications, change requests and manufacturing instructions
Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product leads, control engineers, and project managers and technicians. Effectively communicate design concepts and requirements to stakeholders.
Site work: Assist installation build teams and commissioning at customer sites. The relevant candidate is ideally educated to degree/HND calibre in Mechanical or Electro-Mechanical Engineering. This role will suit candidates from a range of light or heavy product design backgrounds. We would be especially keen to hear from candidates involved in NPI/NPD or bespoke product development, especially larger scale automation projects. You have an excellent working knowledge of 3D CAD systems (SolidWorks) and ideally build and test of final products. Working knowledge of PLC Controls Automation products, conveyors, sensors, robotics will be a distinct advantage.

This job represents a superb opportunity for a proven Mechanical Design Engineer who loves large electro-mechanical product / equipment design and automation. As the business expands so too will your role and the scope of your role. Your base salary £45-50,000 is complemented by company pension, 33 days annual leave (including public holidays) and salary sacrifice benefits (car and bike).

Why Robotics Careers in the UK Are Becoming More Multidisciplinary

Robotics used to be the domain of mechanical, electrical and software engineers. In the UK today, robotics is more than motors and control loops — it’s about perception, interaction, trust, regulation and integration into human environments. That evolution means robotics careers are becoming more multidisciplinary. Modern robots interact with people, collect data, operate under constraints, and often assist in safety-critical environments (healthcare, manufacturing, transport). So engineers now collaborate closely with legal, ethical, psychological, linguistic and design experts. In this article, we explore why UK robotics careers are evolving into multidisciplinary roles, how law, ethics, psychology, linguistics & design intersect with robotics, and how job-seekers and employers can adapt to this shift.

Robotics Team Structures Explained: Who Does What in a Modern Robotics Department

Robotics is transforming manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, agriculture, entertainment and more. In the UK, advances in robotics span autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), robotic arms, surgical robotics, drone systems, human-robot interaction, and collaborative robots (cobots). Building effective robotics systems requires not only strong hardware and software, but also finely coordinated teams with clear roles from research through deployment and maintenance. If you’re a candidate applying for robotics roles or an employer hiring through RoboticsJobs.co.uk, this guide will help you understand who does what in a mature robotics department, how the lifecycle of a robotics product works, what skills and qualifications UK employers typically expect, what salaries look like, common challenges, and best practices for structuring teams that deliver.

Why the UK Could Be the World’s Next Robotics Jobs Hub

Robotics is reshaping industries—manufacturing, health care, agriculture, logistics, and beyond. From industrial robots assembling vehicles to surgical robots assisting complex procedures, and from drone deliveries to autonomous inspection systems, the boundaries of what robots can achieve are expanding daily. With rising demand for automation, productivity, and intelligent systems, organisations both public and private are investing heavily in robotics technologies. This surge in adoption has triggered increased demand for professionals skilled in robotics engineering, AI-enabled control systems, hardware design, and integration. The United Kingdom possesses the essential components to become a global robotics jobs hub: world-class research institutions, innovative robotics firms, strong industrial bases, and supportive policy frameworks. This article explores why the UK is well-positioned, where demand is growing, the career paths emerging, and what must occur to fully establish robotics as a powerhouse in UK employment.
