Want a field-based engineering role without the constant callouts, weekend work and corporate nonsense?

A growing automation engineering business is looking for a hands-on Commissioning & Service Engineer to join their close-knit and highly supportive team.

This is a genuinely exciting opportunity to join a business with ambitious growth plans, varied technical projects and a team culture where everyone mucks in and supports each other. They’re hiring due to continued growth and increasing project demand.

The role is heavily field based and will involve travelling across the UK installing and commissioning bespoke automated machinery at customer sites — often working away for several weeks at a time during the working week before returning home for weekends. When not travelling, you’ll be based at the Kent facility supporting machine builds, testing and project work.

This role would suit someone independent, professional and resilient. You’ll be trusted to manage your own workload and represent the business independently on customer sites

What you’ll be doing:

  • Installing and commissioning bespoke automated machinery at customer sites
  • When not travelling to customer sites, you’ll be based at head office working on machinery due to go out
  • Reconnecting and configuring electrical, pneumatic and mechanical systems
  • Supporting machine set-up, testing, fault-finding and final optimisation
  • Working closely with customers during installs and breakdown visits
  • Training operators and site staff on machinery operation
  • Managing projects independently whilst on-site across the UK
  • Supporting service and breakdown activities when required
  • Completing site reports and documentation professionally

What we’re looking for:

  • Working experience within Commissioning, Installation or Field Service Engineering -
  • A relevant Engineering qualification at Level 3 or above
  • Solid experience working with automated machinery, capital equipment or similar
  • Some exposure to and understanding of PLCs (full programming experience/knowledge is not needed)
  • Ability to follow technical specifications and schematics for both mechanical assembly and electrical installation
  • Basic electrical competency as a minimum - confidence reconnecting pre-terminated wiring and multi-pin connections
  • A strong underpinning mechanical engineering foundation – able to fault find professionally ensuring machinery is working to the standard expected
  • A very good level of physical fitness as well as significant manual handling experience – you will be moving and installing very heavy equipment regularly
  • A proactive “just get on with it” attitude
  • Someone practical, adaptable and happy working away regularly and independently on customer sites
  • Strong customer-facing communication skills with a good understanding of how to act as a ‘brand ambassador’ to commercial customers
  • A career driven outlook with a genuine desire to learn, develop and grow independently
  • Full UK Driving Licence with no more than 3 penalty points

What’s on offer:

  • Opportunities to exceed the base salary through overtime and travel
  • Opportunity to work on bespoke, technically interesting machinery
  • Genuine autonomy and trust in the role
  • Varied work across different commercial customer sites
  • Growing business with strong long-term opportunities
  • Supportive and highly experienced engineering team
  • Opportunity to build a long-term career within automation and commissioning engineering
  • No ‘on call’ expectations!

This role would suit an ambitious engineer who enjoys variety, independence, travel and hands-on engineering — someone who wants to be part of a growing business rather than just another number.

Where to Advertise Robotics Jobs in the UK (2026 Guide)

Where to advertise robotics jobs UK in 2026: the specialist boards, university channels and community routes that reach robotics, SLAM and controls talent.
