Controls Engineer - FMCG

Location: West London
Salary: Competitive + benefits
Type: Permanent, Full-time
Industry: Food & Beverage Manufacturing
Shifts: Monday-Friday | 24/7 facility | Some flexibility required

We’re working with one of the UK’s leading food manufacturers who are investing heavily in automation and controls innovation across their site. As a Controls Engineer, you’ll be right at the heart of keeping production lines running smoothly - Tackling complex control challenges, driving process improvements, and helping to shape the next generation of smart manufacturing on-site.

This is a hands-on, high-impact role within the Engineering Department, supporting workshops, plant rooms, and production areas, no two days will ever look the same.

What You’ll Be Doing
You’ll take the lead on maintaining and improving the site’s automation and control systems, from fault-finding to upgrades and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities include:

Troubleshoot and resolve hardware/software faults across live production control systems (including PLC, HMI, and networked devices).
Carry out online code monitoring, modification, and development - Ideally in Siemens TIA Portal / Simatic Manager.
Create and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and layout drawings.
Catalogue site control systems, maintain backups, and manage obsolescence planning.
Support SAT/FAT processes and ensure all controls documentation is accurate and audit-ready.
Lead and mentor maintenance engineers on automation best practices.
Support continuous improvement projects focused on performance, reliability, and efficiency.
Analyse downtime and develop solutions to boost OEE and reduce recurring issues.
Ensure all work complies with Health & Safety, Food Safety, and Quality standards. What You’ll Bring
We’re looking for someone who’s both technically sharp and hands-on - Someone who loves getting into the detail but can also step back and look at system-wide performance.

You’ll need:

Preferred: Degree or advanced training in Electrical / Controls / Automation Engineering.
3+ years’ experience as a Controls Technician or Engineer in a production, automation, or FMCG environment.
Strong understanding of PLC architecture, HMI systems, and field control devices.
Working knowledge of control system communication protocols (Profibus / CanBus / Ethernet/IP).
Experience with DC motor controls, servo motion, robotics, packaging or labelling equipment.
Familiarity with ATEX environments, permit-to-work systems, and Management of Change.
Strong analytical mindset and excellent fault-finding skills.
Proficient in MS Office and CMMS systems.
Flexibility to support a 24/7 operation when needed. Why You’ll Love It
You’ll be joining a highly skilled engineering team in a fast-paced, technology-driven environment.
You’ll have autonomy to make a real impact on uptime, efficiency, and process control.
Career development, ongoing training, and exposure to major automation upgrades.
A chance to work in a modern, audit-ready, world-class manufacturing site. Interested? If you’re a Controls Engineer who loves solving complex automation problems and wants to work with cutting-edge tech in the food & beverage sector, we'd love to chat!
