About us

Our NPI function is where ideas become reality. We explore uncharted territory, develop disruptive concepts, and turn bold visions into tangible products that redefine categories. Working closely with Research, Design, and Development teams, we combine creativity with technical expertise to deliver innovations that meet real user needs. From early ideation to business case development, NPI ensures Dyson stays ahead of the curve—creating products that are not only different but demonstrably better.

About the role

As a Design Engineer within New Product Innovation (NPI), you will be responsible for the invention, development and maturation of disruptive technologies, product architectures and user-centric solutions that enable Dyson's future product categories. Working within our world-leading Research, Design and Development (RDD) organisation, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, scientists and technology specialists to solve complex technical challenges and create differentiated products that redefine performance standards.

This role spans early-stage technology exploration through to proof-of-concept development, providing the opportunity to influence product strategy, technology roadmaps and next-generation consumer experiences.

  • Generate, evaluate and develop innovative product concepts, technologies and system architectures that deliver step-change performance and consumer benefit.

  • Translate consumer, technical and commercial requirements into engineering solutions through structured problem-solving, experimentation and iterative design.

  • Design, engineer and build functional prototypes, demonstrators and test rigs to evaluate feasibility, performance and technical risk.

  • Develop subsystems, mechanisms and product features through the application of sound engineering principles, analysis and validation.

  • Undertake hands-on design, development and testing activities to rapidly prove concepts and establish technical viability.

  • Collaborate with Research, NST and cross-functional engineering teams to integrate emerging technologies into robust product concepts and system designs.

  • Plan, execute and interpret experimental test programmes, using data-driven insights to optimise performance and guide engineering decisions.

  • Conduct engineering analysis, root-cause investigations and technical reviews to identify opportunities for product and technology improvement.

  • Produce high-quality technical documentation including requirements, specifications, design reports, DFMEA inputs, test methodologies and development evidence.

  • Support technology feasibility studies, risk reduction activities and concept maturation to enable progression through the innovation pipeline.

  • Maintain awareness of emerging technologies, scientific developments and industry trends, leveraging these insights to identify new opportunities for innovation and differentiation.

About you

  • Degree qualified (or equivalent experience) in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design Engineering, Physics, Materials Science or a related technical discipline.

  • Strong engineering fundamentals with the ability to apply first-principles thinking to solve complex technical challenges.

  • A highly creative engineer who combines innovative thinking with analytical rigour and structured problem-solving.

  • Practical hands-on experience in the design, build and evaluation of prototypes, mechanisms, electromechanical systems or consumer products.

  • Experience using iterative engineering processes involving concept generation, prototyping, testing, data analysis and design refinement.

  • Proficient in 3D CAD design and the creation of engineering drawings, assemblies and prototype components.

  • Comfortable planning and executing experimental investigations, interpreting results and making evidence-based recommendations.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to articulate technical concepts clearly to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.

  • Able to work effectively within small, multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced innovation environment.

  • Self-motivated, curious and driven to explore new technologies, challenge assumptions and deliver engineering excellence.
