About us

At Dyson we are encouraged to think differently, challenge convention and be unafraid to make mistakes. We are proud to be authentic, different and pioneers. We are driven by a desire to solve real problems and improve everyday lives with intuitive solutions that do more, but use less. Family owned, we are not restricted by conventional thinking; we explore, discover and learn for ourselves. Never satisfied, we believe everything can always be made better.

About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Engineer/Senior Research Engineer – Mechanical Design (depending on experience) to join the successful Motors and Power Systems team within the Research, Design and Development (RDD) department. Within this team the successful applicant will be working on the early-stage research and development of our future Dyson Digital Motors (DDMs), Battery Pack Assemblies (BPA) and other electromechanical assemblies, for example, heaters and actuators.

We are seeking candidates who are adept at both independent working as well as collaboratively within multifunctional teams. The ideal candidate should demonstrate the ability to swiftly adapt to changing priorities and projects in a dynamic research environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver robust, mass production feasible design solutions that fulfil the fundamental design requirements using established design processes while documenting decisions and rationale

  • Generate design requirements and identify risk areas

  • Develop 3D CAD and engineering drawings for mechanical components and assemblies along with test rigs and assembly fixtures

  • Understand and comply with relevant International Standards

  • Be responsible for delivering parts, assemblies and systems from concept to proof of principle to pre-production levels of resolution

  • Develop innovative and novel concepts with high value IP while considering freedom to operate

  • Create new, and improve upon existing, best practices and processes within the team

About you

  • Degree in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline (2:1 degree or better) with an appreciable level of industrial experience in the design and development of mechanical systems

  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles

  • Capable of performing hand calculations to provide initial design direction and confidence in simulation results

  • Great problem-solving abilities using a variety of methodologies

  • High level of knowledge of 3D computer aided design (CAD) software packages

  • Working knowledge of GD&T

  • Able to carry out physical builds of sub-assemblies and test them to prove out, characterise and better understand their behaviour

  • Understanding of physical failure methods, approaches to root cause analysis, and DFMEAs

  • Understanding of design verification approaches and ability to define suitable test methods

  • Able to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in written and verbal formats

  • Able to carry out structural FE analysis of components and assemblies to inform their design, and create an associated validation programme to verify results

  • Able to work with a variety of multi-disciplinary project teams and product design teams

  • Understanding of materials science and manufacturing processes

  • Can-do attitude, willing to work outside of comfort zone and learn new skills and abilities in the process

  • Passionate and highly motivated by technical problem solving with a high attention to detail

  • Knowledge of design for manufacture (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) methodologies

  • Innovative & Creative Thinker - challenge conventional approaches, generate novel ideas, and apply scientific principles to develop breakthrough technologies and solutions.

Desired technical knowledge and skills:

  • Knowledge of power system design, including motors, transmissions, heaters, actuators, and energy storage solutions

  • An appreciation of other engineering disciplines such aerodynamics, thermodynamics, CFD analysis and electrical, electronics and electromagnetic systems

  • Able to carry out thermal FE analysis of components and assemblies

  • Experience using Siemens NX, ANSYS Workbench and Siemens Teamcenter

  • Able to carry out simple modal, thermal, rotordynamic and impact analyses of components and assemblies

  • Appreciation of statistics and robust design techniques

  • Capable of performing tolerance stack analysis on complex assemblies

  • Confident in building test fixtures/jigs and carrying out FRACASs where required

  • Practical experience of taking vibration measurements and analysing results to assess system modes and responses

  • Able to verbally communicate complex engineering topics in Mandarin

  • Working knowledge of production part approval process (PPAP)
