Automation & Controls Engineer

Location: Bristol
Salary: £45,000-£50,000

We are recruiting for an Automation & Controls Engineer to join a well-established manufacturing business operating within a fast-paced production environment. This is a hands-on role focused on maintaining, programming and improving automated manufacturing and packaging systems.

The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining and developing PLC-controlled equipment, integrating automation technologies, and driving continuous improvement across automated production lines including filling, capping and robotic handling systems.

Working closely with Production, Engineering and Technical teams, you will support automation upgrades, equipment integration and machine optimisation to maximise efficiency, reliability and uptime.

Key Responsibilities

PLC Programming & Controls Support

Program, modify and troubleshoot PLC systems including Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Omron and Mitsubishi.

Maintain and optimise HMI interfaces and machine control software.

Debug and optimise machine control programs to improve equipment reliability and efficiency.

Automation Systems Integration

Integrate sensors, actuators, drives, servo systems and motion control into PLC-based automation systems.

Support robotics integration including pick-and-place applications.

Assist with specification and commissioning of new automation equipment.

Fault Finding & Troubleshooting

Diagnose complex electrical, control system and automation faults across automated manufacturing equipment.

Carry out root cause analysis and implement long-term corrective solutions.

Maintenance of Automated Equipment

Perform planned, reactive and predictive maintenance on automated production systems including:

Filling and capping machines

Conveyor systems

Automated packaging equipment

Robotics and pick-and-place systems

Automation Projects & Continuous Improvement

Support equipment upgrades and automation improvement projects.

Work with operations teams to improve Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and reduce downtime.

Contribute to Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) initiatives and manufacturing optimisation.

Commissioning & Documentation

Assist with installation and commissioning of new machinery and automation systems.

Maintain and update control system documentation, electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
