Senior Mechanical Engineer – Automation & Robotics | Reading, Berkshire | Salary Up To £70,000

Are you an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer with a passion for automation, robotics, and precision engineering? We’re working with an innovative client in Reading who are scaling up their next-generation automated production systems and are looking for a skilled engineer to play a pivotal role in their growth.

The Opportunity
This is a hands-on role where you’ll take ownership of mechanical design and development, leading projects that integrate automation, robotics, and material handling at scale. You’ll design innovative mechanisms, solve complex engineering challenges, and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams in electronics, software, and process engineering.

Key Responsibilities



Lead the design and development of automated mechanical systems and modules

*

Troubleshoot and optimise existing designs to ensure reliability and efficiency

*

Mentor junior engineers and support their technical growth

*

Drive process improvement across design tools, prototyping, and manufacturing methods

*

Work on high-speed material transfer systems, precision mechanisms, and ruggedised designs built for 24/7 operation

About You
We’re looking for a solution-oriented engineer who thrives in a fast-paced, innovative environment and enjoys building functional, scalable systems.

Essential Skills & Experience:

*

Degree (2:1 or above) in Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline

*

Proven experience designing automation mechanisms and handling systems for small objects

*

Strong background in high-speed automated material transfer design

*

Proficiency in SolidWorks and hands-on engineering approach

Desirable Experience:

*

Experience with fluid mechanics (pumps, valves, nozzles, spraying systems)

*

Knowledge of rapid prototyping (3D printing, CNC machining, injection moulding)

*

Designing systems with stepper/servo motors and automated material handling

*

Previous work in regulated sectors such as food, pharma, or medical devices

*

Project management or leadership experience
