Why is this role important for Automata?

As an Automation Engineer, you will help turn customer workflows into reliable automated systems. You will work at the intersection of robotics, software, hardware, and laboratory instrumentation, supporting the configuration, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation of automated workflows on Automata’s LINQ platform. You will work closely with experienced engineers, product teams, and customer-facing teams, gaining hands-on exposure to real-world automation projects.

In this role you will be responsible for:

• Building, configuring and testing automated lab workflows using Automata’s LINQ platform.

• Integrating laboratory instruments such as liquid handlers, incubators, plate readers, centrifuges, and robotic devices.

• Writing and executing test scripts to check that workflows are reliable, repeatable, and ready for customer use.

• Troubleshooting hardware, software, and process issues during system commissioning.

• Supporting customer training and helping users understand how to operate automated workflows safely and effectively.

• Translating customer needs into clear technical requirements for product, engineering, and delivery teams.

• Creating and maintaining technical documentation, including test records, workflow descriptions, risk assessments, safety documentation, and system notes.

• Supporting project delivery from design and scoping through to installation, testing, and handover.
  

What it takes:

• A degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent practical experience in automation engineering, mechatronics, robotics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, biomedical engineering, or a similar technical field.

• A strong interest in robotics, automation, hardware/software integration, or laboratory technology.

• Experience with Python, scripting, test automation, or technical troubleshooting.

• A practical, hands-on approach to solving problems.

• The ability to communicate technical ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical people.

• Curiosity, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn quickly.

• Availability to be based in or travel regularly to Frankfurt am Main.

• Willingness to travel to customer sites in Germany and occasionally across Europe as needed.

• English language skills.
  

Nice to haves:

• Experience with lab automation, liquid handlers, plate readers, incubators, or similar benchtop equipment.

• Familiarity with CAD, wiring diagrams, system layouts, or technical drawings.

• Experience using tools such as Jira, Asana, GitHub, or similar project/task tracking systems.

• Knowledge of life science workflows, laboratory environments, or regulated/validated systems.

• Experience with robotics, PLCs, sensors, actuators, motion systems, or industrial automation.

Wir suchen eine:n Automation Engineer für unser Customer Delivery Team in Deutschland, um die technische und wissenschaftliche Lösungsumsetzung für unsere Kund:innen voranzutreiben. Diese Rolle eignet sich ideal für Absolvent:innen, Junior Engineers oder technisch versierte Kandidat:innen mit einem Hintergrund in Automatisierung, Mechatronik, Robotik, Elektrotechnik, Software, Biomedizintechnik oder einem verwandten Bereich.

Du agierst als Bindeglied zwischen Produkt- und Engineering-Teams sowie den Kund:innen und stellst sicher, dass sie mit der LINQ-Plattform von Automata erfolgreich sind. Dazu gehören die Konfiguration ihrer Systeme, der Aufbau und Test von Workflows sowie die Schulung der Kund:innen in der Nutzung der Plattform. Du arbeitest an der Schnittstelle von Wissenschaft, Hardware und Software und bist verantwortlich für die Umsetzung von Laborautomatisierungssystemen bei unseren Kund:innen.

Warum ist diese Rolle wichtig für Automata?

Als Automation Engineer hilfst du dabei, Kunden-Workflows in zuverlässige automatisierte Systeme zu übersetzen. Du arbeitest an der Schnittstelle von Robotik, Software, Hardware und Laborinstrumentierung und unterstützt die Konfiguration, das Testen, die Fehlersuche und die Dokumentation automatisierter Workflows auf der LINQ-Plattform von Automata. Du arbeitest eng mit erfahrenen Engineers, Produktteams und kundennahen Teams zusammen und sammelst praktische Erfahrung in realen Automatisierungsprojekten.

In dieser Rolle bist du verantwortlich für:

• Den Aufbau, die Konfiguration und das Testen automatisierter Labor-Workflows mit der LINQ-Plattform von Automata.

• Die Integration von Laborinstrumenten wie Liquid Handlern, Inkubatoren, Plate Readern, Zentrifugen und Robotiksystemen.

• Das Schreiben und Ausführen von Testskripten, um sicherzustellen, dass Workflows zuverlässig, wiederholbar und bereit für den Kundeneinsatz sind.

• Die Fehlersuche bei Hardware-, Software- und Prozessproblemen während der Systeminbetriebnahme.

• Die Unterstützung von Kundenschulungen und das Vermitteln eines sicheren und effektiven Betriebs automatisierter Workflows.

• Die Übersetzung von Kundenanforderungen in klare technische Anforderungen für Produkt-, Engineering- und Delivery-Teams.

• Die Erstellung und Pflege technischer Dokumentation, einschließlich Testaufzeichnungen, Workflow-Beschreibungen, Risikobeurteilungen, Sicherheitsdokumentation und Systemnotizen.

• Die Unterstützung der Projektdurchführung von Design und Scoping über Installation und Tests bis hin zur Übergabe.

Was du mitbringst:

• Ein abgeschlossenes Studium in einer relevanten Fachrichtung oder gleichwertige praktische Erfahrung in Automatisierungstechnik, Mechatronik, Robotik, Elektrotechnik, Maschinenbau, Informatik, Biomedizintechnik oder einem ähnlichen technischen Bereich.

• Ein starkes Interesse an Robotik, Automatisierung, Hardware-/Software-Integration oder Labortechnologie.

• Erfahrung mit Python, Scripting, Testautomatisierung oder technischer Fehlersuche.

• Eine praktische, hands-on Herangehensweise an die Lösung von Problemen.

• Die Fähigkeit, technische Ideen sowohl technischen als auch nicht-technischen Zielgruppen klar zu vermitteln.

• Neugier, Genauigkeit und die Bereitschaft, schnell zu lernen.

• Die Möglichkeit, in Frankfurt am Main ansässig zu sein oder regelmäßig dorthin zu reisen.

• Die Bereitschaft, bei Bedarf zu Kundenstandorten in Deutschland und gelegentlich innerhalb Europas zu reisen.

• Englischkenntnisse.
