Mechanical Design Engineer 

Are you a creative Mechanical Design Engineer looking to elevate your skills in a fast-paced, project-driven environment? An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a forward-thinking engineering business that specialises in the design and delivery of bespoke automated machinery and robotic systems.

Based in near Portsmouth, with occasional travel to client sites across the UK, this role is perfect for someone eager to take ownership of projects from concept to commissioning and contribute to complex, high-value automation solutions.

Key Responsibilities:
Develop mechanical concepts for robotic and automated machinery.

Produce detailed mechanical designs, design calculations, and verifications.

Lead technical aspects of projects, including design reviews, customer liaison, and part/specification selection.

Generate accurate BOMs, support procurement, and collaborate closely with build and controls teams.

Ensure compliance with safety regulations through risk assessments, CE marking, and related documentation.

Provide hands-on support and technical guidance during system build and installation phases.

Requirements:
A degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent qualification).

Strong 3D CAD skills ideally in Solidworks or Inventor.

Demonstrable experience in mechanical concepting and design — ideally within automation, special purpose machinery, or robotic systems.

Solid knowledge of fabrication, sheet metal design, machining, and mechanical assembly methods.

Understanding of British standards, tolerance stack-ups, and geometric tolerancing.

Ability to produce and interpret mechanical design calculations.

Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach to team-based project delivery.

Desirable:
Experience in robotic handling applications.

Working knowledge of electrical control systems and multidisciplinary integration.

Familiarity with CE marking, risk assessments, and compliance documentation.
