Salary - £50,000-£55,000

The Role
Our client, a leading engineering and automation specialist, is seeking a Controls Engineer to join their team. This role involves working across the full project lifecycle, from concept and development through to commissioning and customer support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out PLC, HMI, and motion control programming and modification
  • Configure and integrate software and hardware for networked control systems with distributed I/O
  • Program and integrate vision systems for inspection and measurement (e.g., Cognex or similar)
  • Provide control system support for prototype machines, new builds, and existing equipment
  • Ensure machine safety compliance with relevant international standards and best practices
  • Prepare control system documentation for manufacture, testing, and customer handover
  • Support customers through commissioning, troubleshooting, and fault finding (including on-site work)
  • Identify and implement improvements to processes, productivity, and quality
  • Contribute to product development and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Build effective working relationships with internal teams, customers, and suppliers
  • Follow company procedures and maintain high professional and ethical standards
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
  • HNC / HND (or equivalent) in a software, controls, or automation-related discipline
  • Proven experience in PLC, HMI, and motion control programming
  • Experience with Rockwell Automation platforms (e.g., Logix, Safety PLCs, Kinetix, Studio 5000, FactoryTalk View ME)
  • Experience with Siemens systems and TIA Portal (advantageous)
  • Exposure to robotic applications (e.g., Yaskawa) preferred
  • Experience with machine vision systems advantageous
  • Strong understanding of control system architecture and automation principles
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Self-motivated with a proactive and adaptable approach
  • Strong problem-solving ability with a solution-focused mindset
  • Comfortable working in diverse and international environments
  • Willingness to travel internationally for commissioning and support work
  • Valid passport and eligibility for international travel
  • Travel Requirements
    Typically 4-5 international trips per year, each lasting approximately 2-3 weeks, depending on project needs.
